About Sulgrave Manor

History of Sulgrave Manor

Peace between Britain and the United States was established by the Treaty of Ghent after the War of 1812. As part of the centenary commemorations for this treaty, some of the most influential people on both sides of the Atlantic funded the restoration of Sulgrave Manor, which was the home of the English ancestors of George Washington, first President of the United States. Sulgrave Manor opened to the public on June 21, 1921, after the restoration was delayed by the First World War.

Over the years the Manor has been presented in many different ways. Today's experience focuses on the stories of individuals in the Washington family who have had an impact on society, migration, and integration, as well as those related to Sulgrave Manor itself. This historic location is the birthplace of a legacy that unites nations and the stories told aim to inspire consideration on why working together is still important today.

Plan a Visit Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave Manor is open for groups and day visitors to explore the manor, gardens, and exhibitions. Throughout the year they plan family fun days and school holiday activities to encourage multi-generational group collaboration and creativity. They also host free digital seminars in conjunction with several UK and US academic partners.

A visit to Sulgrave Manor includes a tour of the home of the Tudor Washington family with hands on activities from playing 14th century board games and dressing up like a Tudor! You can also walk through the diverse and beautiful garden designed in the 20th century that boasts topiaries, historic vegetables and herbs, and heritage fruit trees.

The manor has several exhibitions focused on the life and legacy of George Washington, the challenges faced by John Washington when traveling and settling in the new American Colonies, and the stories of the restoration of this historic home by both US and UK donors.
